Season 1, Episode 17
(The One Where Cougar Town Became My Comfort Show)
The first scene of this episode features Blumfies (Snuggy-like attire), Gay Traps and the first mention of Grayson’s Tiny Eyes, all while the gang argue about whether men and women can ever just be friends. The last scene is Travis and Bobby “Noodling” (i.e. catching a fish using your arm as bait), and somewhere in the middle Andy rides a motorcycle into a hedge, Laurie tweets and Tom has no shoulders. Amongst all these seemingly unrelated comedic elements, the Cul-De-Sac Crew is firmly established as a group of people who truly care about one another, and the Graysonship takes wing. This episode marks the first time Cougar Town masters its perfectly balanced tone of absurd comedy and heartfelt depiction of adult friendships.
Season 1, Episode 7
I always think of this as the episode that shaped what the show would become. Grayson bets Jules that she can’t go an entire day alone and she fails so hard that she ends up hosting a pool party. Grayson finally gives in to (maybe) being part of the Cul-De-Sac Crew, Travis tells Laurie that she’s too good for Dale and Andy goes Full Shawshank (an early example of Cougar Town’s blend of visual, pop culture and absurd humour).
And it was totally like losing a Big Lou/Carl/Joe. This mug was cheap, but I used it every single day. It had traveled across the Pacific Ocean four times and survived. But it could not survive me multitasking. It fell to its death on Tuesday December 10th, 2013 as I knocked it on an armchair while I was brushing my teeth and rushing to the movies.
Rest in peace Fish Mug, 2009-2013.
In the lead up to SEASON FIVE(!) I thought I’d share some of my favourite episodes. If you have some favourites to share, please send them in!
